MPS PreK-5 Literacy Adoption
Minneapolis Public Schools is consistently looking for ways to improve curriculum and the success of our students. In reviewing Pre-K–5 literacy resources, it was clear that educators agreed that improved resources and materials were needed. Since our last K–5 literacy core adoption in 2008, there have been multiple shifts in content standards. In the spring of 2016, a decision was made to conduct a comprehensive Pre-K–5 literacy core curriculum and review process. The result from this review was a unanimous decision to seek a new core literacy adoption that would focus on the “Big Five” of literacy acquisition — phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and text comprehension. Minneapolis Public Schools will send out a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a full Pre-K–5 literacy adoption. We will form a curriculum adoption Steering committee and Expanded Steering committee that includes community representatives, and initiate the Equity and Diversity Impact Assessment. In addition, we will pilot curriculum materials in early 2017. We will make our decisions based on literacy best practices, community input and evaluations of pilot materials.
