Curriculum Adoption Process of Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards

Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) is committed to ensuring all curriculum used within MPS is representative of MPS values and has been adopted through a rigorous process, that prioritizes community engagement. The curriculum adoption process keeps student achievement and cultural relevance at the center. All adoptions must be, at the minimum, aligned to Common Core State Standards and Minnesota State Standards
 
The curriculum adoption process values the need for continuous improvement cycle design and input from key stakeholders to ensure diverse/inclusive perspectives and insight. MPS believes with the expertise of staff in partnership with the community, the curriculum adoption process is enhanced and reflects shared values and outcomes. 

Comprehensive view of MPS curriculum adoption process:

  1. Public-facing Curriculum Adoption Process
  2. Public-facing History and Future Curriculum Adoption Cycles
  3. Internal Work Plan that includes phases and tasks assigned to MPS staff/departments to study and plan, adopt and implement and evaluate and reflect the curriculum adoption process with fidelity

Core beliefs upheld through curriculum adoption process:

  1. All students have access to curriculum.
  2. All students find themselves and their experiences echoed in the curriculum.
  3. All stakeholders have access and opportunity to engage in curriculum adoption process.
  4. MPS is stronger when curriculum is aligned to MPS core priorities and used with fidelity.
  5. Curriculum serves the mission and vision of MPS and supports academic excellence of all MPS students.

Phase 1

Three phases of curriculum adoption

  1. Establish Steering Committee*
  2. Review achievement data, current data, current materials and standards
  3. Create Vision, Outcomes and Values
  4. RFP to interested vendors
  5. Establish Expanded Steering Committee*
  6. Evaluate vendor presentations*
  7. Make recommendation to Steering Committee for vendor finalists for pilot
  8. Pilot
  9. EDIC of Process and Pilot

Phase 2

  1. Final Selection with Price Quote/Contract
  2. Approval from Superintendent
  3. Approval from Board of Education
  4. Begin Installation
  5. Begin Professional Development Implementation
  6. Monitor Implementation with Continued Support
  7. Collect Evidence of Student Learning

Phase 3

  1. Year 1 Implementation, Evaluation, Reflection and Adjustments through a Continuous Improvement Cycle
  2. Year 2 Implementation, Evaluation, Reflection and Adjustments through a Continuous Improvement Cycle
  3. Year 3 Implementation, Evaluation. Reflection and Adjustments through a Continuous Improvement Cycle
  4. Year 4 Full Evaluation of Curriculum, Implementation and Impact
